Super food is a well-used term in recent times, but what exactly is a super food? does a super food wear a cape? Does it give you special powers? or Give you the desire to wear spandex?
Simply put a super food is a food that is nutrient-dense, that help to promote good overall health. They are characterized by having fewer calories, whilst combining this with a high level of vitamins and minerals, as well as disease-fighting antioxidants.
Some examples of super foods are, Beans (legumes), berries (especially blueberries), broccoli, green tea, nuts (especially walnuts), oranges, pumpkin, salmon. spinach, tomatoes, whole grains and oats. All of which when combined in a balanced diet, can help stop and even reverse diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and some forms of cancer.
Conversely, the ill-effects of an unbalanced diet comprising of prepackaged foods, and convenience foods, are the base for ill health and disease. This can be seen through such things as low energy levels, mood swings, constant fatigue, weight gain, a general lack of comfort with your body. All of which are just a few of many signs that your diet is unbalanced.
An unbalanced diet causes problems with tissues regeneration, growth and development, brain and nervous system function, as well as problems with bone and muscle systems.
An unbalanced diet can lead to malnutrition, which is basically a diet lacking in nutrients which has been consumed for a period of time long enough to deplete the body of its nutrient stores (as well and not supplying any nutrients in the first place). The symptoms of malnutrition include lack of energy, irritability, a weakened immune system leading to frequent colds or allergies, and mineral depletion that can trigger a variety of health concerns including anemia.
